Horizon 6 (with View) is now GA!

By | June 22, 2014

In April 2014, VMware launched Horizon 6, and at 8pm 19 June (PST), it went GA.

This is an exciting release as it adds new capabilities and much anticipated feature enabling Hosted Applications!

Key notable updates are as follows:-

  • Supported for Hosted Applications – this is a feature that has been hot on the request list, and has finally made it. This allows IT to publish selected applications to end users without having to provide a full virtual desktop.
  • Introduction for Cloud Pod Architecture (CPA) – this enables large View architectures which span multiple pods, and still have the pods be aware of each other. This addresses large deployments in several ways.
  • Support for Virtual SAN – Virtual SAN has been supported since Horizon View 5.3.1; in Horizon View 6, integration between the 2 improved further as Virtual SAN policies will be automatically created.
  • Updates to View Configuration Maximums – for a View Pod, there isn’t much of a change, but more of the introduction to new capabilities and their related maximums, such as CPA and Virtual SAN.
  • Enhancements to PCoIP – the key improvement here is that user experience over wireless networks (or less than ideal connections) has gotten better; in addition a few PCoIP defaults have been changed in favor to reducing bandwidth utilisation by up to 30%.
  • Licensing Changes – The product bundles have been changed to have 3 tiers, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise; I would think most customers will go for the Advanced package as it includes Virtual SAN, Workspace, Mirage and Hosted Apps.
